That Spielberg utilizes symbolism suggesting 9/11, the Holocaust, and maybe the attack of London during World War II is, for me, less a misuse than an impression of how genuinely he means the crowd to take the on screen commotion. The air is overwhelming with danger, and the delineation of a masses numb with stun in the midst of the pulverization is chillingly persuading, notwithstanding a couple of seconds of Hollywood cheddar. We don’t have Will Smith conveying smart jokes directly after millions are slaughtered by the attacking outsider powers, a la “ID4.” Nor is there a very remarkable rah-rah, let’s-kick-some-outsider ass temperament as the outmatched Earthlings take a stab at retaliating. Indeed, even the apparent hero (a serene, powerful Tom Cruise) folds at one point under the monstrosity of what’s going on.
